Project Title: The Pencil Hunt
Location:
Various locations across the central city
Description:
Do you fancy a game of hide and seek? Chances are that you have seen plenty of teethlikescrewdrivers’ pencils far and wide across the city, now you have the chance to find and claim your own to keep! The artist’s Little Street Art Festival project returns the functionality to his visual icon of choice, and in doing so, encourages both exploration and creativity - providing the opportunity and tool for each. Spread throughout a fittingly pencil-shaped walking route in central Ōtatuahi, a selection of hand-sharpened yellow pencils await discovery, each one screen-printed with the artist’s moniker – a functional version of his iconic street logo! Explore the city and find your own pencil (don’t worry, the artist will replenish the trail throughout the festival!) – and then use it to get creative and share your drawings with the hashtag #pencilhunt - don’t forget to tag @teethlikescrewdrivers and @thelittlestreetartfestival on Instagram…
Bio:
teethlikescrewdrivers (@teethlikescrewdrivers) is a creative based in Ōketeupoko Lyttelton. Inspired by artists such as The Toasters, he has developed his pencil icon as an example of the meaningless becoming meaningful. The artist’s pencil design has been infinitely repeated across Ōtautahi in varied forms and sizes, becoming an unavoidable part of the urban landscape. In addition to his street-based work, teethlikescrewdrivers’ typographically-inspired productions, rendered on found objects, from thrift-store paintings to vintage handsaws, provide an alternative outlet for his creativity.
