Smeagol Doesart
“Avoiding people is my specialty, but in art I'm out here doing it…”
Ōtautahi-based creative Smeagol Doesart has over two decades artistic experience and counting, exploring a range of approaches, from tattoo to painting, digital work to sculptural creations. With a distinctive style, Smeagol can put his twist on anything, employing bold linework, bright colours, deep detail and a wicked sense of humour, he'll give anything a go. “If you're after something weird, you know where to find me…”
Drips is a surprising subversion of one of the city’s most iconic settings. It is incredible to see what a creative mind like Smeagol Doesart can create using just cardboard, expanding foam and some paint – his works appear like dripping, oozing molten stone amidst the solid setting of the Christchurch Art Centre.
The strangely unsettling presence of these forms questions our assumptions about permanence and our comfort in familiar places, playfully suggesting things are never really permanent, all with the artist’s trademark humour. With a collection of temporary installations spread across various spaces within the Arts Centre, it is time to explore and get a bit melty!
